Mary Jo Flynn, Emergency Management Assistant Director for the Anaheim Fire & Rescue Department, will present a session on current trends in social media and emergency management at the upcoming 2015 Government Social Media Conference & Expo (GSMCON) in Reno, Nevada.
Mary Jo manages multiple social media accounts for the Fire & Rescue Department and has over seven years of emergency management experience including as a consultant/instructor with the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center (NDPTC) specializing in social media education for emergency managers. She holds the Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) credential through the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) and is the Chair of the Emerging Technology Caucus.

Over just the past few years, social media has become a vital aspect of emergency management and disaster response. “Trends in Social Media and Emergency Management,” will explore the historical role social media has played in disaster information flow.
Mary Jo will identify and explain the current trends, research, and applications of how social media is used in emergency management. Conference attendees will learn the importance of developing teams and identifying the proper social media tools and resources to complement information sharing strategies and data analysis.
As government agencies grow and improve their social media monitoring proficiency, they can also develop the ability to use the constantly evolving social media data and metrics to meet citizen demands during large-scale disasters.
