Welcome, first-time attendees, to your first Government Social Media Conference! We’re so glad you decided to join us in Seattle this March, and we can’t wait to introduce you to this experience.
You’ve already done the hardest part — you made the commitment of investing in not only your career but also yourself. Over three days, you’re going to learn the latest best practices, connect with your government social media peers and leave Seattle with confidence.
Are you ready to get social?! Before we meet in Seattle, here are some tips & advice to help you have the most successful GSMCON2020:
1. Find your crew
Whether you know many of the other attendees, you’ve geeked out over your favorite accounts from afar or you are just starting out in this profession, you’ll find your crew at GSMCON.
Make sure to attend the Welcome Reception from 7 – 9:30 p.m., Monday, March 23 on the 5th level of the convention center to meet peers in a fun atmosphere. Sponsors, speakers and network reps usually attend, too, and don’t forget to say “hi” to the GSMCON Team!
Start off your Tuesday night right by exploring Seattle’s eateries with fellow attendees during the Restaurant Romp. Right after conference hours, you can meet up at various restaurants to network — all while grabbing grub together. More details will be available closer to the conference.
After sessions end at 5 p.m. (and at noon on Thursday), the rest of the time is yours to explore! Use the official hashtag, #GSMCON2020, to find out where attendees are going and join in — you’ll see people heading to the Space Needle, visiting Pike Place Market or any of these fun activities to do in Seattle.
2. How to be everywhere at once
With six concurrent breakout sessions, odds are there’ll be multiple sessions you’ll want to go to at once. Don’t stress yourself out by trying to jump to different rooms. Instead, focus on your most-wanted sessions and use this workaround: the Virtual Pass.
A couple of weeks after the conference ends, we’ll send you access to your included Virtual Pass so you can view video recordings of most keynotes, audio recordings of most breakout sessions and have access to speaker slides — all at your own convenience.
3. Personalize your experience
Whether you’re a beginner and need a government social media crash course, looking for a hands-on experience on smartphone video or a breakdown of how the First Amendment applies to your social media, you can sharpen your skills by signing up for an add-on, pre-conference workshop. Each workshop is taught by industry experts who will provide you with best practices and practical tips to build your strategy and technique.
All workshops are held on Monday, March 23, before the conference officially starts. If you didn’t add your workshops during conference registration, you can still reach out to us at email@example.com to add-on a workshop and get the most out of your GSMCON2020 experience.
4. Don’t forget…
Besides bringing your laptop or notebook for note-taking, here are some additional items attendees like to bring:
- Your uniform; please feel free to represent your agency during the conference.
- Your agency’s challenge coin; many attendees trade with each other every year.
- Comfortable shoes, casual or business casual clothing (but feel free to take it up a notch for Monday’s Welcome Reception!).
- Business cards to stay connected with your new friends.
5. Get involved today
Start connecting with your peers now by marking yourself as “going” on the GSMCON2020 event page! Introduce yourself, ask any questions you might have and receive helpful updates during the conference.
If you’re not already collaborating with us on Facebook, join our Government Social Media Community Facebook Page. This will become one of your go-to resources, and a great way to e-meet your peers.
We’re excited for what will be the largest GSMCON yet with over 1,000 attendees, and we’re even more excited YOU will be a part of it!
It might feel like a lot to keep track of, but the GSMCON Team will be here to answer any questions along the way. Make sure to add firstname.lastname@example.org to your contacts so you receive the latest updates, reminders and GSMCON2020 news. During the conference, we’ll also be in touch daily with highlights, after-hours events and more. We’ll see you in Seattle!
